What is the value proposition of Microsoft Dynamics 365 for Talent?

There has been a lot of noise over the last eight months around the Dynamics 365 for Talent (Talent) suite of apps that Microsoft announced in June 2017. Driven by a slick interface, the potential of short implementation timeframes and rapid product development cycles, there has been a lot of excitement and interest in the Talent offering. But what exactly is Talent? And what’s the value proposition for your organisation?

While there’s been a lot of noise about the “new” solution, it’s important to understand that the underlying HRIS component was a mature product that has been part of Dynamics AX for over 15 years. The base Dynamics AX solution provided a comprehensive collection of master data to support the hire to retire cycle but was lacking in some areas which often required additional third party solutions, or custom development to meet a company’s HR requirements. 

Microsoft’s shift to a “cloud first” strategy, with rapid development cycles and instant customer feedback has provided a platform to deliver value through specific workloads. Talent was one of the first workloads that was “peeled” off from Dynamics 365 Finance and Operations and offered as a stand-alone SaaS solution with its own product team responsible for its success. This has allowed Talent to develop new functionality and capability at a rapid pace, with monthly releases allowing users of the system to consume and provide feedback on what works and what doesn’t quite hit the mark.

So what is Dynamics 365 for Talent?

It’s a collection of apps called Attract, Onboard and Core HR all designed to strategically attract, retain and optimise your talent to support your business. What’s different about Dynamics 365 Talent is the strong focus on Employee and Manager user experience, moving the focus from having HR administrative staff managing everything from Employee master data, through to course and skill updates and leave absences, to providing an intuitive interface for employees to update and request information.

The value proposition that Talent provides includes:

  • ERP and platform agnostic – you don’t need to invest in a Microsoft ERP solution to use Talent.  While Microsoft have developed (or are developing) integration to Dynamics 365 Operations, AX 2012 and NAV, the Talent solution is a SaaS solution that can be integrated to your existing ERP system using the Common Data Service.
  • A low cost of entry – the minimum user count is five Operations users, which allows you to start small and grow as you need. Team member licenses offer a cost effective method for all employees to access the application.
  • Scalable model – the option to buy and use what you need. You could buy one of the Talent 365 apps (say Attract) at a lower cost, and buy additional apps as needed. Alternatively, you can buy the talent suite of Apps if you need the full set of functionality.
  • Rapid deployment of apps – rapid SaaS deployment of apps allow you to start configuring and using the system immediately!
  • Strong roadmap – Microsoft publish their roadmap with the backlog of work, and work in progress showing the investment in the product going forward.
  • Continuous update - updates are deployed monthly, meaning you are always up to date with software and able to take on new functionality as it’s released.
  • Rich analytics – leveraging Microsoft’s investment in Power BI to provide rich, analytical dashboards out of the box with no additional customisation or license requirements.
  • Try before you buy – the move to cloud gives you the ability to sign up to a trial and evaluate the solution before you commit.
  • Leverage your Microsoft investment – while not essential, Dynamics 365 Talent really leverages the full Microsoft suite – Office365 integration allows for seamless Outlook integration for interview bookings, calendar placeholders; Microsoft Excel for mass record uploads; Microsoft Word for offers and onboarding templates…the list goes on! In addition, the use of machine learning is something we expect to see in the near future.
  • LinkedIn integration – Microsoft is starting to leverage their investment in LinkedIn, and the integration with LinkedIn recruiter provides an efficient platform for recruitment teams to attract and onboard Talent … without having to double-key information! 

While there are currently three apps, expect Microsoft to release more apps in the short term.
