About our Client
Our client is a State Government owned organisation that builds, maintains and operates the electricity network in the south west corner of Western Australia. They deliver a safe, secure and reliable electricity supply to just over one million connected customers including homes, businesses, factories, mines, schools, hospitals and public transport providers.
Our client required consultants with specific Project Management Office (PMO) skills who could review the way in which the IT Portfolio Delivery team delivered projects to its customers. The existing IT PMO methodology, loosely based on PMBOK, had been established some years prior and had grown organically as the team itself grew.
With an increasing demand for professional project management services by the business, it was seen as an opportune time to review the overall methodology being utilised. This included reviewing all processes and templates, reducing and consolidating where appropriate and producing a well-documented set of steps to be followed with associated fit for purpose artefacts.
Empired conducted a specialist review of all existing project delivery artefacts as well as interviewing key project delivery stakeholders to gain an understanding of pain points. Through this process a number of gaps were identified, including missing and incomplete process documentation, a need to clearly define all project management activities and responsibilities across the whole IT Branch and a requirement to reduce and simplify existing project documentation and repositories.
Following on from this process Empired designed a detailed plan and implementation strategy for a new enhanced methodology, central to which was the categorisation of projects to allow the application of the appropriate level of governance based on project size and risk profile. The methodology was delivered in an innovative, interactive format replacing the traditional project management approach of manual based information. Through a variety of review and training sessions the new methodology was incrementally rolled out and refined, thereby ensuring engagement of key stakeholders and acceptance into the operational environment.
Our client's IT PMO now has a lean fit for purpose methodology. The overheads for running small projects have been reduced significantly. For larger projects, review processes have been put into place to ensure they are set up for success, increasing the likelihood of projects delivering to plan and business benefit realisation. Project Managers have a clear and consistent process to work to and are supported by up to date training materials and resources.
Empired has now been commissioned to undertake a similar review and methodology implementation in the larger context of the business.
